[ACORN Japan's Market Insight]

Compared to the ownership of home video game consoles

(e.g. PlayStation and Nintendo Switch),

the ownership rate of VR headset is still low at 5.8%.

Among Japanese aged 20 to 59, 5.8% own VR headsets.

According to a proprietary survey conducted by ACORN Japan in October 2024, 5.8% of Japanese people aged 20 to 59 own VR headsets.

Breaking down the figures by age group: 7.7% of those aged 20-29, 8.6% of those aged 30-39, 5.6% of those aged 40-49, and 2.4% of those aged 50-59 own VR headsets. The majority of owners fall between the ages of 20 and 49, particularly within the 20 to 39 age range.

In contrast, it is generally said that the ownership rate of home video game consoles such as PlayStation and Nintendo Switch exceeds 50%, meaning VR headset ownership has only reached about one-tenth of that.

Among VR headset owners,

PSVR is by far the most popular.

The most commonly owned VR headset was the PlayStation VR, owned by 3.3% of Japanese people aged 20 to 59. PlayStation VR2 followed, with 2.4% ownership.

Meta Quest 2, a VR headset made by Meta, was owned by 1.1%, while Meta Quest 3, released on October 10, 2023, was owned by 1.5%, slightly more than Meta Quest 2. On the other hand, Apple’s Vision Pro had the lowest ownership at 0.5%.

Among Japanese people aged 20 to 59, 4.7% own PlayStation VR headsets, compared to 2.2% who own Meta’s VR headsets, meaning PlayStation VR ownership is more than double that of Meta’s headsets, making it by far the most popular.
